Is my receiver sufficiently powering my speakers?

The power output of the receivers has nothing to do with the quality of the sound. The Surround outputs do not provide a full-range signal to the speakers connected to them. The lows and highs are cut off. THAT is why you are noticing such a difference in the audio.
